I've been doing gi jiu-jitsu for about 2 months now, and it's an interesting change in the game. I did no-gi BJJ and MMA for 2 years prior, so I've gotten to play with both sides of the gi game. I have to say, it's a whole lot of fun to add a gi into the equation. All of the grip options, control given to your opponent and the new avenues of chokes give you much more to worry about. Personally, I don't like the advantage it gives when controlling  others, but I  enjoy that it becomes much harder for me. Being able to grab a cross-collar and just hang on until a good choke presents itself seems pretty lame to me. My fingers are starting to callous, and I've noticed a large increase in my grip strength. Now when I'm out fighting children, I'll have an extra advantage.

I've been talking a lot about losing some weight and getting down to competition size again. I currently walk around at about 165, and I competed before at 170. I believe the best option is to start lifting weights and doing real cardio, and seeing what happens to my weight.

I realize that it's likely dreadfully boring to read this, and for that I apologize. The only reason I do it is to see my thoughts presented outside of my head, and to help encourage myself to do what I need to do. Writing things down is one of the only reasons I stayed physically active in college and after. I would really like to be one of the old men that can still hang with the punk kids like I am now. There's a 55 year old man in Idaho Falls that mauled me like a kitten, and I'd LOVE to be in the same shape as him when I'm that age.

That leads me to my questions, for my friends who read this:

1. What are your physical goals now?
2  What is your long-term goal in terms of health and your body?
3. Are you happy with where your fitness level is now? If not, what will help you change it?
4. Why aren't you doing Judo or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Boxing or Sambo or Muay Thai or something? They're a blast!

I went to see Sara this weekend, and that was pretty sweet. We also got Thai food, which is one of my favorite sets of consumables.

Also, I watched my 5th movie of the year: Black Snake Moan. It's a pretty surreal film starring Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci. It has some pretty hilarious parts, and Sam Jackson spent 6 months learning blues guitar for it, and he's pretty awesome.

Hi Ranger_Davy! It's been 1834 (wow, that's a big number) days since you joined Xanga... won't you support us by going Premium?

5.02 years since I started this thing. So, I walked into a building on the ISU campus, and I caught a strong smell of the same cleaner they used on the floors at the Academy. It was the same smell that hit you when you first drove up to the doors after a closed weekend and walked in to the second floor landing. I've been looking through Academy stuff for the rest of the day, really.

I never really realized what a profound effect that place would have on my life. My closest group of friends is still largely 3W and 2FE people, I still jump at the chance to see Academites, and virtually every opportunity I've gotten has been at least partially because of my time there. I really wonder what I'll be saying about it 5 years from now, and if it's still having the same effect on the kids currently enrolled.

Does anyone else miss it the same way, or am I just waxing sentimental in my old age?

If every job opening requires at LEAST 4 years of experience, why did I bother getting a degree?

I am very married right now.

Moving to Idaho in 3 days, and then the adventures begin again.

Being with Kenzie is definitely the best decision I've made.
